BESTIES is an after-school program that supports the mental health and wellbeing of vulnerable children aged 8 to 12 years, living in regional WA, who require social and emotional support.
Program Description
This program is for children who are experiencing challenges at school, home or socially. It aims to foster each child’s self-worth, emotional regulation and resilience through capacity building and community connectedness.
Program Structure
The program is delivered once a week during school term. Each session is facilitated by experienced youth workers. This allows children to receive tailored supports whilst keeping them safe and supported.
Each session starts with a relaxed and informal approach allowing children to settle in gradually, which is particularly important if they have had a stressful and/or overwhelming day at school or home.
Structured activities are delivered with a focus on various themes and topics that build self-awareness, emotional regulation, social skills, teamwork, independence and resilience.
Activities include:
• Understanding self through reflective journaling
• Getting to know each other through games and activities
• Building friendships through teamwork and fun activities
• Understanding and expressing emotions through music, arts and crafts
• Learning life skills through activities such as cooking
• Taking on projects such as music video to provide an avenue for self-expression and empowerment

What is the cost of the program?
There is no cost to participate in the program.
Is a referral required to secure a place in the program?
No, a referral is not required. You may be referred to the program through local services, but this is a self enrolling program.
Is the program just for girls?
Absolutely not! The program is open to all children aged 8–12, and we encourage both boys and girls to get involved. Everyone is welcome to participate and enjoy the experience.
Does it cater to children with learning difficulties?
Yes. Our program is designed to support all children and can be beneficial for children with ADHD, autism, ADD and other additional needs.
